Does UH at Manoa have a good program for International Relations? What are its strengths in that department? And would I be able to go on to a good graduate school if I went there for undergrad?

Are politics like a rocking chair?
Saturday, September 27th, 2008Giving you something to do but not really getting you anywhere?
I am realizing that politics (specifically democracies and republics) just seem to be a bunch of hog wash, attempting to get people to buy into systems that are not really for or about them in attempts to bolster the nations international agenda. It’s almost as if the government is saying, “if we can get these idiots to believe that they actually have a say and that there is an ‘American Dream’ worth achieving, why then we can get them to do anything”. We are told to vote to make a difference, but is my voice really going to make a difference when I am voting for Joe Schmoe down the street and the media and their followers (i.e., the People) have already chosen Tom Harry and Jane ****? When we all know politicians get to Washington D.C. and get conditioned anyway, why do we follow these candidates as though they are one of us when they can quickly become one of them?
What do you guys think?

Saturday, September 20th, 2008Who’s looking forward to Biden destroying Palin in the debates?
Monday, September 15th, 2008Joe Biden can talk about national security for hours, but Palin will be confused and unable to differentiate Sunnis from Shiites in the first minute. He’ll be able to talk about his record of visiting Georgia and presiding over international committees, while she’ll comment about the taste of mooseburgers. He’ll also talk about his solid record of fighting against violence directed at women and small communities, while she’ll detail her flat record of winning state beauty contests and her pending investigation for letting family affairs mix with politics. He’ll be tough and accurate, while she’ll stumble and show how far her executive “experience” takes her.

Do You Miss Being Young, Uninformed, And Completely Naive About Politics?
Sunday, September 14th, 2008I was born in the year 1969. When I was 7 years old, we had the Presidential elections of 1976. I had heard the title “President of the United States” being mentioned maybe one or two times, but I really had no clue as to what that was, what it meant, or who that was. Nor did I care. I just enjoyed my time being a kid. The news of the day, political or not, didnt enter my consciousness.
Fast forward about 5 years from 1976 to 1981. Now, I’m 12 years old and I know what the President of the United States is, but again I still don’t really care about politics or the news of the day. In fact on the day of Reagan’s inauguration, I was in school and my History teacher brought with him to school his black and white 12 inch screen tv so that all the kids could see the inauguration. He set up his tv in the classroom where we had our science classes (because it was the biggest classroom that could hold alot of people) and invited the kids and teachers from other classes to come watch. What with the tv set being so tiny, and the classroom being so filled up with students, some of them standing on chairs, me and some of my friends couldnt see the tv even if we wanted to. We saw this as a welcome break from our regular studies. So, hidden from sight from the teachers by all the other kids, we quietly played around in the rear of the classroom.
Fast forward another 4 years or so and I’m fully aware of politics, the issues of the day, local and international. I know who the President is, what a congressman and senator is, etc. And thats the start of my blood pressure problems. ![]()
And here I am today, and sometimes I look back when I was around 7-12 years old. I was dirt poor, and I went without alot of material things, but I still had no clue of how bad the economy really was (it was pretty bad throughout the entire 1970s-early 80s), along with all the other garbage that was occuring in the whole world that was making the adults crazy. And I was completely unaware of it all. Just getting on with my life, being a kid, the outside world with its bad news not affecting me mentally. How I sometimes miss that.
“No, the older you get, the smarter you get.”
Well thats true, but there are times where I’d gladly trade in my newfound smarts for my old ignorance
