What can I do with an International Relations major and a minor in Spanish?

enitsirhc asked:

I am a freshman in college and I am majoring in International Relations with a Minor in Spanish and I was wondering what are some good programs to get involved with (not just in college) but outside of college as well. I also want to know what are some good paying jobs that I would be able to look into with this type of major.

What can you do with that major? Not much! Maybe work for an embassy somewhere.

Depends what you goals are. With a University degree alone you can get many jobs regardless of the major.

Make sure to become fluent in Spanish and try to live in a spanish speaking country for at least 3-6 months. Not only will this assist you in your fluency, but also it will demonstrate experience working people of another culture. Strong interpersonal skills is one of the biggest concerns when companies or governments hire people in general and adding a cross-cultural element to that only makes it stronger.

I’d recommend looking into the PeaceCorps straight out of college, as it’s a relatively easy job to get and holds a lot of weight in the international employment field. It also makes for an easier “in” when applying for an embassy.

Another common international job right out of college is operations management consultation. Normally they look for smart people who don’t mind heavy travel.
